Fresh From Origin

Display teas are modern-day descendants the Chinese tea bricks, popular during the Sung Dynasty (A.D. 960-1279). To prepare these, tea was steamed, squeezed of moisture, hand pressed and baked at high temperature. The tea bricks became so valuable, they were often used as a form of currency. Today they are merely used as decorative plaques. However, the art of shaping tea remains. Chinese artisans have been very creative in developing shapes and forms for what are now known as display or showplace teas. The tea leaves, usually green, are tied together with very fine silk or other tea leaves and left to dry to form a whimsical shape.
