The etymology of the word “raspberry” is a little hard to pin down. Some say it may relate to “raspise,” a sweet wine from the Mid-15th century. Others say it is more closely related to a Germanic word for thicket. The word “rasp,” associated with rough or coarse qualities, might provide a further clue due to raspberries’ bumpy appearance. Of course, none of these relate to the term “blowing a raspberry,” a phrase which finds its origins in Cockney rhyming slang and wasn’t established until the 1800s.
