The Twist is a dance that became popular with teenagers in the late 50s and early 60s. Singer Hank Ballard wrote the song of the same name in 1959 after seeing the dance performed, but it was later re-recorded and released by Chubby Checker at the direction of fan favorite and American Bandstand host Dick Clark, who thought Checker had a more wholesome image. Though the song became a worldwide sensation, it was criticized early on for being too provocative.
