Description

Oolong tea from Taiwan. Formosa, meaning 'beautiful' was what the Portuguese explorers called this island. The oolong tea grown here continues to be called as such. The exquisite bouquet of Formosa Oolong tea is regarded to be the finest in the world. Complex floral notes echo on your palate as you enjoy this product of Taiwan's Ali mountain. Light bodied and softly sweet with an underlying complexity, this oolong will surely come to haunt. Perfect for multiple infusions.

Story

Formosa, meaning 'beautiful island', is what Dutch traders called Taiwan. The teas grown here, mainly north of Taipei, continue to be called as such. Tea can be harvested up to six times a year here, although the high mountain teas may be only twice a year. Oolong tea had been a very important export for the island until the 1980's, until tea growers turned their focus to the legions of oolong fans living on the island. Today, oolong tea is mainly produced for tea lovers in Taiwan, and the rarest, most prized lots are extremely difficult to find in the U.S. Tea culture is so alive and well in Taiwan, annual competitions are held amongst tea growing districts to reward the most outstanding oolongs each year. Gold medal winning oolongs are some of the most expensive in the world.

"Something of a mad scientist myself, I am especially appreciative of those willing to chance doing something beyond both the expected and the traditional. Whoever first thought to take a basketful of tea leaves and turn them into a concoction capable of making something as uniquely flavorful as, for instance, a cup of this particular Ali Shan Oolong has long ago been forgotten. Even so, praise be to both them and the present makers of this wonderful, golden green tea! A postscript. I`ve found the 2nd immersion sweeter and more floral than the first. 3 minutes at around 195 degrees seems to especially highlight the almost Tupelo honey-like overtones. "

"Good tea, if you are looking for subtle flavors this is your cup, is not a GREAT tea, it is well balanced in sweetness, smoky and feel creamy (no astringency if brewed the right way). "

"I'm not sure if this is a green or white tea, but it is flavorful and smooth. It holds up well to three infusions, and I will probably order it again even though it was not what I expected when ordering an oolong."
