Cream or tea first in the cup? When Chinese porcelain was shipped along with tea to Great Britain, it was considered too delicate to pour hot tea into cups directly, so the Brits put milk in the cups first, then poured on the boiling hot tea, cooling it slightly to (they thought) avoid cracks. When Brits founded their own porcelain companies (Staffordshire, Wedgewood, Blue Willow,) they learned firing the clay gives porcelain cups strength enough to hold hot liquids safely. Too bad they didn’t have our worry-free Cream tea (that’s also vegan and creamy without a drop of dairy)!
