Ingredients & Lore

Watermelon is a special kind of fruit known as a pepo - a berry with a thick rind and fleshy center. Believed to have originated in parts of Africa, the watermelon has crossed oceans and continents to find worldwide popularity. Its most familiar use is as a summertime treat but is also used around the globe in salads, soups, slushies, and cocktails. Even the rind can be fried or pickled to take advantage of the nutrients therein.
In Japan, farmers have used glass molds to form the growing fruit into cubes as well as other shapes. Oh, the endless fun of a giant cubed berry!
