Description

Yunnan is a region in China known for growing large-leaf tea. High mountains covered by mist, clean water and rich soil form ideal growing conditions and contribute to the unique flavor of Yunnan black tea. Our Yunnan Noir is a hand-rolled version of this famous variety, with tightly rolled leaves into a "black snail" shape. The aroma is sweet with hints of honey and fruit. To the palate it is red wine-like with notes of fruit and cocoa and reveals an intense depth of character with each beguiling sip.

Story

Yunnan is the name of the Southern Chinese province bordering Vietnam. It had been a tea-producing region for close to two thousand years. Here grows China's oldest wild tea tree - about seventeen hundred years old. Yunnan's most senior cultivated tree is a relative youngster - a mere eight hundred years old. Yunnan also has the distinction of producing more black tea than any other part of China, although it's a relative newcomer to this variety. Black tea was first produced here in 1939, and is distinguished by its unique peppery taste.

"This is by far my favorite of the teas I have tried so far. I have traditionally liked flavored black teas best, but this is better! It's complex, smooth, and very flavorful. I ordered the "sample" and will definitely be ordering more!"

"Love this tea. Malty, sweet, deep. Nice alternative to Black Dragon Pearls when the stock runs out."

"Very nice. I tend to over-brew it, so it's very strong. Be prepared to twiddle the time and temp to find what's best for you. Brewed too long, it doesn't get very bittet, but very strong. For me, this is a plus."

"I love black teas and this is another one to add to my favorites. I just love the sweet lite taste of honey and slight taste of fruit like after taste. This a smooth very nice rich cup of tea, perfect for the morning."

"A nice basic black tea. You don't need to use too much leaf because they're rolled, which I love. It's fun to watch them unfurl in the water. It also resteeps really well."
